At death’s door with H1N1 for three weeks
Dr. Marie Christine Leisz pushed down on the arms of Brad Lange to test his muscle strength during a checkup at United Hospital. Lange is recovering from the flu after three weeks in intensive care.
[Minneapolis Star Tribune, Dec. 6, 2009] In a small fraction of children and young adults, the H1N1 virus is unexpectedly deadly. For unknown reasons some perfectly healthy patients end up drowning in their own fluids.
Kim Lange’s son was still coherent when the doctor said it was time to put him on a ventilator. He was as stoic as he could be — a 23-year-old who had never been sick. But the look of terror in his eyes as he looked up from the hospital bed tore her heart.
