In labor at work, Mom gives birth in ambulance
Casey Sue was born Sept. 1, 2010 in an ambulance on the way to the hospital after her mother started having contractions at work in Columbia Heights.
[WCCO 4 News, Sept. 3, 2010] Although her baby girl wasn’t due for two weeks, Brooke Jensen started having contractions while at work in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, last Wednesday. Her co-workers called an ambulance.
The ambulance crew, which included Allina EMT Rick Swedlund and Allina Paramedic Matt Miron, soon realized the baby was breech, meaning backwards. A breech delivery is usually handled by a doctor at a hospital, but there was no time. The baby came out a couple of minutes after getting on the road.
Baby and mother recuperated at Unity Hospital before they went home Friday.
“With the heart attacks and other stuff, something like this makes you want to come back to work,” said Swedlund, who has been involved in nine births during his career as EMT. Watch the full story on wcco.com.
